WFP launches mobile food vouchers!
Â
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a mobile food voucher programme to help 1,000 Iraqui refugees in Syria.
As part of this programme, which is the first of its kind, refugees will be sent an SMS containing a code that will act as a kind of “virtual voucher“. The voucher can then be redeemed at government shops in exchange for basic food items.
According to Daly Belgasmi, WFP’s Regional Director for the Middle East, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, this programme is the latest step in finding innovative ways to deliver help to the needy.
“This pilot project will allow WFP to meet the needs of refugees living in a city where food is available but they are unable to afford it.”
This innovative SMS programme means that refugees will no longer have to queue at food distribution points and will be able to make their own food choices – it is a prime example of how SMS can be used in the field.
The pilot project is expected to last for four months but may be extended depending on the outcome.
