According to reports published in www.change.org, the war in Gaza is the first modern conflict to be reported by social media.

Israel’s ban on foreign media from entering Palestine, means that citizen journalism has flourished, with Twitter messages from both sides of the conflict being used to piece together an accurate picture of what is really going on in the middle east.

Even Al Jazeera is using open source software to develop a tool for reporting the conflict that takes SMS and Tweets from Israeli and Palestinian citizens to create an interactive map and timeline for the war.

This really highlights that with the constant advances of SMS, it is becoming impossible to restrict the spread of information…even in the most war-torn areas.
