Social media steps in when the press cannot!

I recently came accross another great example of social media filling in the (sizeable) gaps during times of press repression, from the Daily News.
As the violence increases between anti-government protestors and Iranian security forces, “citizen journalists” have turned to YouTube, Twitter and Facebook to report on what is occurring to the outside world.
While the Iranian government has prohibted any western news services from operating out of Tehran and restricted the use of cell phones and SMS messages, social media has become the last resort for those intent on exerting their freedom of speach.
Dozens of videos have been posted to You Tube over the past few days, reporting on the violence, and Twitter users such as “Mani” and “Sootak” are sending up-to-date photos of the protests.
News agencies such as the BBC, CNN and ABC are then able to use this content to keep the rest of the world informed!
