Red Cross raises over US$ 5 million in SMS campaign…and counting
An article published in social media magazine, Mashable, today confirms that the US Red Cross has raised US$ 5 million via SMS for its Haiti appeal…and SMS donations continue to flood in!
The Red Cross began its appeal just a couple of days ago, asking US supporters to send an SMS with the word “Haiti” to 90999 in order to make a US$10 donation.
The Red Cross has received widespread praise for implementing such a simple campaign, which, combined with State Department involvement and considerable social media presence, has turned it into a viral funding initiative.
According to Susan Watson, Director of Marketing and Visibility at The Red Cross, “The needs are so tremendous in Haiti, and we are honored that people continue to give to the American Red Cross. Raising this amount of money, $10 at time, is a true testament to the American spirit.â€
