Public participation reaches a whole new level
When even Mozart has jumped on the SMS bandwagon, you know it’s time to change…
The New York Times reported this week, that Mozart’s opera, Cosi fan tutte, which opened this weekend, has been given a serious technological overhaul.
Rather than follow in the usual operatic format of ladies and gentlemen peering at the stage from behind binoculars, the Underworld Productions Opera Ensemble, decided to invite theater goers to vote for the ending of their choice, live, via SMS.
The audience can vote on nuptials between any combination of three female and three male characters. The cast will then perform the democratically chosen ending.
The opera is expected to be a hit, especially among the American Idol generation who constantly demand greater participation in their entertainment.
And if this is the future of the entertainment industry, one can only assume that third sector supporters and donors are going to continue to expect a greater level of direct participation in the ways in which organizations campaign and use their funds.
Time to join Mozart?
