Mobile Mobilization winners 2009 N2Y4 award
Winners have been announced for this year’s N2Y4 Mobile Challenge.
FrontlineSMS: Medic took first prize. FrontlineSMS: Medic is a variation of FrontlineSMS, an open source SMS client, and provides an open source software package for healthcare applications in the developing world.
This software performs three essential functions:
1) Doctors can view all medical data pertaining to a patient, via FrontlineSMS, online at a central hub.
2) All patient medical records will be sent to OpenMRS, an open source software package which integrates medical records.
3) Cell lab: This includes colour imagining technology which allows intracellular “holograph†images of cells to be taken with simply the CCD chip ubiquitous in most cameraphones.
This software is expected to have a major impact on rural healthcare providers and their patients.
Other shortlisted initiatives in the 2009 Mobile Challenge include:
The Extraordinaires smartphone software (iPhone, Blackberry, that allows millions of people to perform brief micro-volunteer tasks on their smartphones in a few minutes of spare time.
And VozMob, an open-source multi-media platform optimized for low-cost mobile phones that lets users create, share, and reflect on stories about their lives and communities.
