Little did Jack Dorsey, the brains behind Twitter, know three years ago this week, when the very first Tweets were sent, that his simple idea would transform into the phenomenon that it is today.
This social networking and micro-blogging service, which allows users to send and receive updates (or “Tweets”) in 140 characters or less has transformed into a vital news-service that dissipates information as it happens.
Last December, the Israeli government was the first to hold a worldwide press conference, via Twitter, to take questions from the public about the war against Hamas in Gaza.
Large businesses use Twitter to provide product and service information.
NASA used Twitter to break news about the discovery of what appeared to be water ice on Mars.
And hundreds of celebrities use Twitter to provide their fans with the most minute details of their personal lives.
Hopefully, it will only be a matter of time before third sector organizations jump on the bandwagon and begin to exploit Twitter’s full potential for their own causes.
