A great step forward for Amnesty in the use of mobile phones!
Kiberia is Africa’s largest slum, crowded onto just 550 acres of sodden land that straddles the main railway line. Most residents earn barely enough to rent a mud-floored, tin roofed wooden shack with no toilet or running water.
This is a clear example of the power of mobiles for social change.

Winners have been announced for this year’s N2Y4 Mobile Challenge.
FrontlineSMS: Medic took first prize. FrontlineSMS: Medic is a variation of FrontlineSMS, an open source SMS client, and provides an open source software package for healthcare applications in the developing world.
This software performs three essential functions:
1) Doctors can view all medical data pertaining to a patient, via FrontlineSMS, online at a central hub.
2) All patient medical records will be sent to OpenMRS, an open source software package which integrates medical records.
3) Cell lab: This includes colour imagining technology which allows intracellular “holograph†images of cells to be taken with simply the CCD chip ubiquitous in most cameraphones.
This software is expected to have a major impact on rural healthcare providers and their patients.
Other shortlisted initiatives in the 2009 Mobile Challenge include:
The Extraordinaires smartphone software (iPhone, Blackberry, that allows millions of people to perform brief micro-volunteer tasks on their smartphones in a few minutes of spare time.
And VozMob, an open-source multi-media platform optimized for low-cost mobile phones that lets users create, share, and reflect on stories about their lives and communities.
